ORESME, NICOLE. (b. France, ca. 1320; d. Lisieux, France, 1382) mathematics, natural philosophy. Oresme was of Norman origin and perhaps born near Caen. Little is known of his early life and family. In a document originally drawn in 1348, "Henry Oresme" is named along with Nicole in a list of masters of arts of the Norman nation at Paris. I. Latin Commentaries Preliminary remarks: Oresme studied at the Faculty of Arts in Paris and obtained the degree of Master of Arts before 1342. Footnote 10 Most of Oresme's Latin commentaries are the result of his teaching activity at the same Faculty. As such, they count among Oresme's early works, dating from the mid-1340s. To this group belong Oresme's commentaries on Aristotle's Physica Home Science Vol. 167, No. 3920 A Geometrical System: Nicole Oresme and the Medieval Geometry of Qualities and Motions. THE NATURE OF LIGHT. Oresme's preliminary arguments may also be divided into two subgroups: those on the nature of light, and those on the relationship between reflection and the scattering of light. His arguments on the nature of light rest on a distinction between two types of light, represented by the Latin terms lux and lumen. ORESME, NICOLE(c. 1320-1382) Nicole (Nicholas) Oresme was a Master of Arts and Theology at the University of Paris, royal counsellor, translator into French of Aristotle's works, and bishop of Lisieux.
