In 2003, Gjoa Haven (population approx. 1185) celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Admundsen expedition. Although Gjoa Haven is becoming more modern, and is home to Canada's most northerly golf course, traditional activities are still enjoyed by many, including throat-singing, drum dancing and hunting. Gjoa Haven is situated at 68 38'N, 95 53'W on King William Island in Nunavut's Kitikmeot region. It is in the Mountain Time zone as a preference, to harmonize with Yellowknife, which is the centre one travels through, in and out of Gjoa Haven. The community is southwest of Taloyoak, southeast of Cambridge Bay and directly north of Baker Lake It's clear from this celebration that Gjoa Haven is not only an arctic discovery, but also a growing, unified community.
