Located in the Nord-Pas de Calais on the Opal Coast, halfway between Calais and Dunkerque, Gravelines, fortified city rebuilt by Vauban, governor in 1706, is part of the Metropolitan Area "Dunkerque Grand Littoral" and belongs to the group of seven municipalities that make up the "Rives de l'Aa. City average of 13 000 inhabitants, Gravelines Elya Yelnats is Stanley's "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather" who lives in the 1850s. It's his broken promise to Madame Zeroni that dooms the Yelnats family to one major curse. We first encounter him as a young boy in Latvia, smitten with the beautiful village girl Myra Menke. After discovering that Myra is empty-headed Louis Sachar's 1998 children's novel, Holes, tells the story of a boy accused of stealing. A judge sentences him to 18 months in a camp where a tyrannical warden has the boys digging holes that appear random. Holes was awarded the 1998 National Book Award and the 1999 Newbery Medal, and was adapted into a film by Disney. As Stanley begins to dig his first hole, the narrator tells the story of Elya Yelnats, Stanley's great-great grandfather. At age fifteen in Latvia, Elya fell in love with Myra Menke. Myra's father, however, wanted Myra to marry Igor Barkov, a 57-year-old pig farmer. Elya went to his friend Madame Zeroni for help. She insisted that Myra was Elya Yelnats is Stanley's "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather" who lives in the 1850s. It's his broken promise to Madame Zeroni that dooms the Yelnats fam Mr. Sir. Rude, crude, and socially unacceptable, Mr. Sir is a pretty straightforward character.
