Otherwhile is an assembly of various themes and ideas that have stayed consistent through much of Kallat's work Sometime in the early days of the lockdown in 2020, Jitish Kallat spent a fortnight in self-imposed quarantine at one of his studios. Some sort of intuitive impulse led the artist to start documenting and keeping a ledger of tiny changes happening inside the studio—a crack in the wall, the abstraction under his chair, and dry edges of a leaf among others. The artist returns to Chemould 25 years after he debuted at the Mumbai gallery with a solo exhibition that blends the logic of geometry with disparate data and images — from dead stars to birth But Jitish Kallat, nurtured on the non-representative teachings of Prabhakar Kolte, eventually turned out to be a discontent schist.
