RNAS Machrihanish… RAF Machrihanish, now a community owned and mothballed RAF base and Commercial Airfield servicing Campbeltown and surrounding areas, was once known as HMS Landrail, Royal Naval Air Station Machrihanish. HMS Landrail (1886) was a Curlew -class torpedo gunvessel launched in 1886 and sunk as a target in 1906. HMS Landrail (1914) was a Laforey -class destroyer launched in 1914. She was to have been named HMS Hotspur, but was renamed in 1913. She was sold in 1921. HMS Landrail was the name given to RNAS Machrihanish, in commission between 1940 and Machrihanish, not to be confused with the earlier airfield of Campbeltown, opened on 15 June 1941, taking the HMS Landrail name from the latter airfield. As with most Fleet Air Arm airfields, the site was home to many different disembarked units, flying a variety of aircraft. Examples included No 772 Squadron who stayed from the beginning until Machrihanish has been associated with aviation since the First World War.
