Ted Belytschko was born in Proskurov, Ukraine, on 13 January 1943 but spent most of his life in the US. He secured a BS in engineering sciences (1965) followed by a PhD in mechanics (1968) at the Illinois Institute of Technology before beginning his academic career at the University of Illinois at Chicago. There he served as an assistant professor (1968-73), associate professor (1973-76) and The Eighth International Workshop on Meshfree Methods for Partial Differential Equations was held from September 7 to September 9, 2015, in Bonn, Germany. It was dedicated to the memory of Ted Belytschko, who passed away in September 2014. Ted Belytschko was one of the leading experts in meshfree methods and coorganized the workshop series over many years. Ted Belytschko, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL Ted Belytschko's main interests lie in the development of computational methods for engineering problems. He has developed explicit finite element methods that are widely used in crashworthiness analysis and virtual prototyping. He is also interested in Ted Belytschko. Walter P. Murphy Professor and McCormick Distinguished Professor of Computational Mechanics Northwestern University 2145 Sheridan Road Evanston, Illinois 60208-3111.
