The gypsy-tinged quartet Devotchka was formed in Denver, Colorado, by multi-instrumentalists Nick Urata, Tom Hagerman, Jeanie Schroder, and Shawn King. While some described Devotchka's sound as polka-rock or circus music, the band was actually a cross-pollination of numerous influences, including cabaret, spaghetti Westerns Devotchka circa 2004. After his Chicago-based alt-country band failed to gain a following, Nick Urata set for the Denver-Boulder area in 1997 and formed Devotchka (from the Nadsat vocabulary of A Clockwork Orange, meaning "young woman"), braiding a sound that was haunting, sweeping, ecstatic and romantic.
