July and August are great times to run the Slickrock Road (trail) on Highway 4 up out of Arnold, CA, near the top of the high Sierra Nevada Mountains (Ebbett's Pass), Lake Alpine area. It's a great trail that can be done in an easy 1/2 day with a long lunch and a stroll near the lake. The Motherlode Rockcrawlers do the Slickrock Trail at Slick Rock Jeep Trail. Slick Rock Road (F.R. 7N17) is a moderate to difficult 4x4 trail that begins at Lake Alpine, skirts the Carson Iceberg Wilderness and ends at Utica Reservoir after crossing multiple granite slabs, rock piles, boulders, and alpine creeks. In 2018, a reroute project added 0.75 miles and two new rock crawling obstacles to Slick Rock Road. Enjoy this 3.5-mile point-to-point trail near Kit Carson, California. Generally considered a challenging route. This is a popular trail for mountain biking and off-road driving, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The best times to visit this trail are May through November. The Sour Grass 4WD trail has been adopted by the Gettin' Off 4WD Club from Milpitas, CA. The trail is approx. 2.5 miles long and rates at about 2 on a 1-4 scale. A stock T-100 made it up with a little guiding after kissing a few rocks on cross members underneath and full-sized pickups with campers have reportedly made it up. Slick Rock Road is only open to wheeled motorized use when at least one of the access roads (Highway 4 or Spicer Road) is open.
