(Courtesy the artist and Hauser & Wirth) Several years ago, the Belgian sculptor Berlinde De Bruyckere was driving to her country house in Beginning 28 January 2016, Hauser & Wirth is pleased to present 'No Life Lost', an exhibition of recent sculptures and drawings by internationally admired Belgian artist Berlinde De Bruyckere.The centerpiece of the exhibition is De Bruyckere's monumental project 'Kreupelhout - Cripplewood, 2012 - 2013' (2013), shown here for the first time in the United States.Kreupelhout - Cripplewood. For the 55th edition of the Biennale di Venezia, Berlinde De Bruyckere presents 'Kreupelhout - Cripplewood' at the Pavilion of Belgium, a new in situ installation that occupies the entire pavilion and is inspired by the artist's dialogue with the city of Venice, its history and the numerous paintings and sculptures of Saint Sebastian around the city. Berlinde De Bruyckere (b. 1964, living and working in Ghent, Belgium) is one of the most important international sculptors of our time. Her sculptures are both fascinating and stirring and literally get »under the viewers' skin«. In her creative work, human beings with their physical and emotional wounds play a central role. Berlinde de Bruyckere is known for her scuptures that explore life and death. For her sculpture that reminds of a wounded tree or bones, she invited the writer J.M. Coetzee, winner of the 2003 nobel prize for Literature, to serve as a curator and artistic collaborator. The collaboration follows a joint project from 2012, when De Bruyckere and The forthcoming exhibition, Berlinde De Bruyckere. Sculptures & Drawings. 2000 - 2014 , i s being held in collaboration with SMAK in Ghent.
