The small church of Domine Quo Vadis, which is situated on the Via Appia, at the junction with Via Ardeatina, marks the spot where, according to the apocryphal Acts of Peter, Christ met Peter as the latter was fleeing Rome. Its official name is Santa Maria delle Piante (St Mary of the Soles of the Feet). Domine Quo Vadis. The Latin phrase Quo Vadis denotes an episode from the life of Saint Peter, as told in the New Testament Apocrypha and the 'Golden Legend'. ("Where are you going?") refers to a story about St. Peter, passed down through pious tradition. Saint Peter fled Rome after Christ's crucifixion, scared that he too would be executed by the Romans; here, he stands in shock as Christ passes him on the road.
