The village of Busby originated on the banks of White Cart Water, which formed the county boundary between Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire. The Lanarkshire part of Busby was transferred from East Kilbride District to Eastwood District in April 1994. Following the abolition of Strathclyde Region in 1996, the whole of the town was included in the Extension, Waterfoot, East Renfrewshire.
