March 15, 2023. Highwood Pass is a scenic and popular hiking destination located in Kananaskis Country, Alberta. At an elevation of 2,206 meters, it's the highest paved road in Canada, and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains, valleys, and alpine meadows. The trailhead is located off Highway 40, about an hour and a half from Calgary. There are dozed of peaks to climb or scramble with all types and levels of difficulty. The Highwood pass area can be reached via the 40 or Kananaskis Trail which starts 65 kilometres west of Calgary. An alternative would be to approach from highway 2 south via Turner Valley and Longview. The pass is closed from Dec 1 till June 15 each year. Highwood Pass North Approach. When we arrived at the gate, there were already plenty of cars parking along the road and cyclists preparing for the ride. Starting at elevation 1678 m, the road begins to ascend very slowly.Next on this list is one of my favorite hikes in the entire Canadian Rockies. You can summit Pocaterra Ridge from the Highwood Pass day use area and go back the same way, but I highly recommend organizing a 2-car system that starts at Highwood and ends at Little Highwood.
