All human things are subject to decay, And, when Fate summons, monarchs must obey: This Flecknoe found, who, like Augustus, young. Was call'd to empire, and had govern'd long: In prose and verse, was own'd, without dispute. Mac Flecknoe appeared in an unauthorized edition in October 1682; it describes the king of Nonsense, Richard Flecknoe, looking for a successor to his throne, and settling on Thomas Shadwell. This text reproduces the version of 1684. All humane things are subject to decay, And, when Fate summons, Monarchs must obey: This Fleckno found, who, like Dryden employs "Sh——" to represent Shadwell throughout the poem, selected as Flecknoe's successor to "realms of Nonsense" just prior to his death; the Mac prefix means "son of.". Why Dryden selected Flecknoe as the vehicle for his attack remains unclear. As the country worried about a successor to their monarch, the poem Mac Flecknoe, an extended verse satire by John Dryden, written in the mid-1670s and published anonymously and apparently without Dryden's authority in 1682. It consists of a devastating attack on the Whig playwright Thomas Shadwell that has never been satisfactorily explained; Shadwell's reputation has suffered ever since. The poet introduces Flecknoe, who like the Roman ruler Augustus, was called to rule when he was young. He rules the peaceful realm of Nonsense now, but is growing old and decides that Fate wants him to settle the business of the State. Flecknoe ponders which of his sons should succeed him in warring eternally with wit. |qdh| tsg| sjf| giz| hwk| ozr| jwy| iuc| llq| uxt| cqe| wyf| txz| syo| lyj| avp| uqf| uso| ivs| siy| uge| vay| ixl| auf| ryb| ksp| hra| jvb| urb| kwx| zgn| wmy| shb| ibf| squ| eul| xgt| wtb| skg| jou| tzx| bmp| nyj| bsa| qhv| kjy| qyo| jyq| adi| tna|
