Los Angeles County Museum of Art Introduction Five Car Stud (1969-72), Edward Kienholz's power - ful tableau, graphically depicts the hatred and violence expressed by many Americans toward racial minorities and interracial partnerships. It is undoubtedly his most important work addressing civil rights. In 1966, when the Los Angeles County Museum of Art put up a retrospective exhibition of Ed Kienholz's work, the County Board of Supervisors threatened to shut it down. The exhibition was filled with some remarkable installations—including impressive works by Paul Thek, Mario Merz, and Panamarenko. Among the works that still remain with me today is Edward Kienholz's tableau, Five Car Stud.
