Little is known of the background of Charles Brooking, although it has frequently been asserted that his father was a house painter working at Deptford and Greenwich. We know that Brooking was painting marine subjects from a very early age, however, since there are at least two extant examples inscribed 'C. Brooking pinxit aged 17 years'. 1795 Mary Brooking, daughter of Charles, marries James Curry. This couple is later found in Monroe County, Va. 1799 Rhoda Brooking aka Brocking marries Henry Miller, Sr. both of Monroe County. She was thought to have been born in Albermarle County, Va., near Orange Co. His unique knowledge and experience have involved him in a number of projects for Historic Royal Palaces, the National Trust, government offices and private clients. These include a wide range of building types from large stately homes to British marine painting developed at the end of the 17th century in response to Britain's mercantile and imperial expansion. Brooking was a major figure in this development.
